Smurfie Syco an young and highly acclaimed artist from North London has been crafting his talents on the mic for some time. Initially a member of “Cold Society”, Smurfie worked the pirate radio circuit, gaining exposure with magazines and industry players alike. A talented athlete, Smurfie has always been focused on reaching the top, whether football or music, Smurfie is an adroit MC committed in all aspects of his life.

Smurfie is one of the new generation in which Grime has been a staple influence throughout his life. Not only has London’s street sounds impacted upon the MC, but artist such as Gnarls Barkley and Arctic Monkey’s to mention but two artists Smurfie admires.

Growing up in an eclectic household of brothers and sisters, Smurfie has been exposed to a wide variety of musical influences. Not always able to listen to the music he loves, Smurfie would have to find something in the sounds throughout the house which he enjoyed. Sunday afternoon reggae by the likes of Toots & the Maytals, Ska, House, Slow Jams, Drum & Bass, a variety of Hip Hop and a whole heap of records would be played, each impacting on the young artist differently. Music has always been prominent in the family dynamic. Smurfie is the first however to pursue a career in music within his immediate family. With a Gospel background, Raised by his Grandmother who is a Pastor and founder of her own ministry, this diverse musical influence has made Smurfie view music in a new light.

Smurfie has grown up in a London in which Grime has been the main focus of the city’s street culture. Happiest spitting over 140bpm, Smurfie is still versatile enough to switch up his style over any beat. In a candid interview, Smurf is quick to dismiss those who say that Grime is dead.

“Grime isn’t dead, its progressed, and some people can’t adapt, They’re to stuck in that box of 2 + 2 = 4, but a guy like me would look at it like 2 + 2 = 22, you get me? you got to look with your mind and not your eyes kinda thing.”

Looking to make a statement with his music, Smurfie is set to take his grime ethos and apply it to a variety of records, since dropping hit 16s on radio, the young artist is now focussed on crafting songs; timeless tracks which impact greatly on the individual.

This enthusiastic, hard working MC has competed in a city in which competition for the mic is fierce. Dirtee Stank Recordings noting his impressive talents and resilient work ethic have given Smurfie Syco the opportunity to truly showcase his dexterity on the mic.
